perfSONAR is an infrastructure for network performance monitoring involving an international consortium of organizations. Deployment of the perfSONAR architecture/tools is worldwide, including but not limited to ESnet, GEANT2, Internet2 and RNP. Internet2 is pleased to be a participant in APAN 26: Sustainable Networking held in Queenstown, New Zealand 4-8 August, 2008. This event will feature a half-day workshop designed to showcase the purpose, benefits, and required resources of the perfSONAR framework when used for measuremet and monitoring across R&E networks. The global impact of performance problems and the methodology that leads to faster solutions will be demonstrated using presentations and real-life examples of monitoring on the networks of current perfSONAR participants. In keeping with the theme of the conference, the collaborative nature of perfSONAR will be highlighted, with special focus placed on the reduced time and resources required to solve cross-domain performance issues and how this advantage directly translates into environmental and operational sustainability.

At its July 8 meeting, the Internet2 Board voted to adopt the Strategic Plan.
Now that the plan has been formally approved, the Internet2 Strategic
Planning and Execution Committee (SPEC) looks forward to working with
members, partners, staff and management to move Internet2 into the
implementation stage. As a part of this process, the Advisory Councils
will soon identify working teams to coordinate with Internet2 staff on
developing plan tasks.
The Internet2 SPEC released a new version of the Strategic Plan, which is
being submitted for discussion and adoption by the Internet2 Board at its 8
July meeting. This revised document incorporates substantial comments, insights
and suggestions received during extensive consultation with Internet2 members
and Board. A “town meeting” is being planned with the community to discuss the
transition from strategy to execution.

The Internet2
Emerging Research & Education Network Special Interest Group (NREN SIG)
is pleased to announce the formation of a new regional interest group focusing
on the Middle East, and to welcome Johnathon Chapman, CIO at the
Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar, as its Chair. The
regional interest group met for the first time during Internet2's
Spring 2008 Member Meeting, and has begun to exchange information via the
Middle East Interest mailing list.To
learn about advanced networking activities and challenges in the Middle East
and to contribute ideas, please visit the regional wiki at https://wiki.internet2.edu:443/confluence/x/8Q
Internet2 is collaborating with ProCurve Networking by HP, an Internet2 Corporate Partner, to upgrade the Internet2 Observatory in conjunction with the deployment of the Internet2 Network. The Internet2 Observatory provides real-time data on the performance and network status information researchers a view of a nationwide high-performance, operational network not possible in a laboratory environment or on the commercial Internet. The upgraded Observatory, one of the ways Internet2 works to support network researchers, is being deployed on the Internet2 Network's hybrid optical and packet infrastructure. The new Observatory will allow researchers to study data covering not only the IP network, but also the Dedicated Circuit Services, which provides dynamically provisioned optical waves. Our Approach: Today, building high performance
networks can not be about providing capacity alone. Internet2 believes
that progress in advanced networking requires a systems approach which
integrates each layer of the network model to create a cohesive,
scalable, and secure system from the ground up. The systems approach is
critical to our community's ability to conduct science, to engage in
research, to educate, and to bring diverse communities together in rich
new ways.
The Call for
Participation for track sessions, side meetings, poster sessions, and demonstrations at the Fall 2008 Internet2

Learning from the present nature of Internet threats will help us secure against Internet2 threats. Whether DDoS attacks, malicious code, or unauthorized access, incidents impacting computer security policies are a reality increasing in frequency and risk.
IT and security professionals need a highly effective counterattack plan to defuse potential damage to the organization, and network forensics is fast becoming the critical link in incident response. With network forensics IT can preserve critical and contextual data surrounding a particular activity to more quickly and accurately address violations of security and use policies.
Attendees will learn how to avoid common incident response errors by leveraging network forensics best practices, policies and procedures. The discussion takes into account
- Restoral versus forensics approaches to botnet incident response
- Security, business and compliance trends
- Current best practices to support botnet incident response initiatives
